Ituango is the biggest hydroelectric project in Colombia. The hydro plant has a total power of 2,480 MW, able to meet 18% of the national electricity demand. This work, which seeks a multi-year collaboration and trust relationship with Epm, Empresas Pùblicas de Medellin, focuses on ATB Riva Calzoni's expertise in the large hydro sector.

For Ituango, started in 2014 and featured in four execution phases, ATB Riva Calzoni produced the entire range of hydromechanical components: in the first and second batches were provided the draft tube slide gates and diversion tunnels gates, 5,5 m diameter penstocks, intakes gates and bulkheads. In the third, instead, bottom outlet slide gates ,steel lining and trashracks,.

The fourth lot was composed by four spillway radial gates (16,5 x 21 m), intermediated bottom outlet sliding and radial gates inluding all hydraulic and electrical components. In this Hydropower project the company has committed all its productive potential, pushing itself over the edge.

These components are extraordinary for weight and dimensions: the four gates of the Vertedero, of 16.5x21 m, are the biggest ever releases from ATB Riva Calzoni factories. The first two, built at MMHE-ATB Malaysia, were delivered in June 2017, while the second batch was shipped in July. The entire engineering part of the hydro components is made in Italy and Colombia, while the hydropower equipment manufacturing is divided between Roncadelle, Pasir Gudang and Medellin.

Supply four (4) sets of Radial Gates with a total fabrication weight of 980 tons.
With the expansion hydropower project, the plant will have eight (8) 300MW generation units. Transmission infrastructure includes a 500kV substation and a 630km transmission line (550kV) that will inject an estimated 4,567GWh/y into Colombia's national SIN grid.
