Rehabilitation Project for Alessandro Volta hydropower plant
ATB Riva Calzoni revamp the Alessandro Volta hydropower plant of Acea's historic power plant in Castel Madama on the river Aniene.
Formed by the dam of San Cosimato, the Castel Madama plant is placed in a context of ancienthistorical and cultural roots.
A stone building, 45 m long and 15 m high, built along the river Aniene, between Tivoli and Rome (Italy), the Roman aqueduct of the Acqua Marcia considered among the most salubrious and pure of the capital. The power of the plant, dating back to World War II, is about 9.4 MW of installed hydropower.
In April, Acea multitutility, the owner of the plant, entrusted the revamping jobs, through the maincontractor, based in Cinisello Balsamo, to the temporary association of companies established by ATB Riva Calzoni and Semat.
The old hydro turbines of the hydroelectric power plant powered by the river Aniene, have been replaced with the new ones supplied by Voith itself, started to work in the last spring.
ATBRC has been involved in the replacement of hydromechanical components: N.2 emergency gates at the penstock inlet (a radial gate and a fixed wheel gate); N.4 small gates for empting the inletchamber; N.2 maintenance gates into the draft tube connecting the hydro turbines chambers with the Aniene stream.
The relationship between ATB Riva Calzoni and this central is centenary: in the company's archivesare still preserved the 1914 design drawings. At that time ATB Acciaieria and Tubificio Brescia cooperated in the realization of the hydroelectric project. In addition, in 1997, ATBRC regenerated one of the three Castel Madama penstocks.
