KARAHNJUKAR Hydroelectric Project 690 MW
Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Plant is located in Fljótsdalshérað municipality in eastern Iceland designed to produce electricity for the Alcoa's Fjardaál aluminum smelter.
With an installed capacity of 690 MW, the plant is the largest hydropower plant in Iceland.
The project, named after the nearby Mount Kárahnjúkur, involves damming of the Jökulsá á Dal River and Jökulsá í Fljótsdal River with five dams, creating three reservoirs. The hydropower project was completed in 2009.
